Although children are normally physically active they may not participate in as many physical activities these days due to their interest in video games, television and computers. Although video games and television are great forms of entertainment, children become sedentary when they spend too much time in front of these devices. Computers can be educational tools as well as entertaining but they can have the same effect.

So as parents how do you get your child to put down the video game controller and get moving?

My husband and I spend most of our at-home down time in front of the computer, so it's hard for us to expect the kids to get outside. Telling them to get outside and enjoy the weather just makes them miserable because to them it feels like a punishment or chore.

The only thing that seems to work is going outside ourselves. When my husband runs outside with a frisbee or a water gun, it takes no convincing to get the kids out there with him. I'm not an active person, so I try other things. Want to go swimming? I grab a book and head out to take them to the pool.

Also, we require that the kids choose one sport each year, and they have to stick to it. We never miss a practice or game to show our support. We created a garden this year, our first as a family. The kids enjoy being outside to plant vegetables, take care of them, and watch them grow. We just harvested our first vegetable today - onions for our soup!
